More than 185,000 charities in England and Wales rely on 22 million volunteers to function. Karin Mochan finds out why people work for nothing when she meets three London-based workers
THE Oxfam shop is a familiar sight along the high street and, with 850 outlets nationwide manned by 22,000 volunteers each week, the charity raised [pounds sterling]11 million last financial year selling donated items and fair trade goods.
Its 40 specialist bookstores make Oxfam the UK's major retailer in second-hand books, among them the Strutton Ground bookshop in Victoria which is staffed by eight or nine volunteers.
