They said we were crazy. I thought they were right. But my wife, Leslie, was resolved: We would pack up the car and the two kids _ Samantha, 7, and Luke, 4 _ and hit the road, driving an enormous loop around the United States that would connect the dots from suburban Washington, D.C., to Ohio to South Dakota to Idaho to Texas to Arkansas to Tennessee and back to Northern Virginia.
Total: 6,600 miles.
In 22 days.
With two kids. In one back seat.
