Q: I have some intensely colored azaleas that bloom in bright shades of orange and hot pink. Since you are the marriage counselor for making compatible plant couplings, what would you suggest I plant to blend with such vivid colors? I would like some perennial plants to grow beneath these tall and fragrant azaleas.

MB: You must be the proud parent of heavy-blooming Exbury or Knapp Hill azaleas. These are deciduous azaleas that lose their foliage in the winter. A compatible mate for such a loud and brassy bloomer would be something in the lime green or chartreuse family. Lamium `Golden ...
