U.S. forces are carrying out their largest single military operation in Iraq since the end of major fighting, officials said yesterday, with more than 4,000 soldiers surrounding a 30-square-mile peninsula north of Baghdad said to harbor Baath Party loyalists planning and carrying out attacks on U.S. troops.
By yesterday, Operation Peninsula Strike in Thuluya had resulted in 397 arrests of suspected Saddam Hussein loyalists, U.S. Central Command said.
