Jun. 13--Leaders of an effort to block expansion of Logan Airport urged a group of Winthrop residents last night to step up their opposition to the plan for a new runway, saying a decision is expected soon on the long-debated issue.

The gathering at a senior citizens center, which drew approximately 60 people, was sponsored by community groups opposed to airport expansion. No one spoke in favor of a new runway, which proponents say will reduce delays for travelers by 25 percent.
