The Program of Mun
A SOMEWHAT YOUNGER contemporary of Shakespeare, Thomas Mun (1571-1641) was a successful London merchant and one of the few early modern notables who put into writing ideas on economic policies considered appropriate to the development of the emerging nation states of Europe. I have chosen Mun as something of a prototype, whose ideas can be conveniently juxtaposed with those of Reagan, largely because his writings afford a brief yet clear impression of the main characteristics of English mercantilism.
