Jun. 14--GULFPORT, Miss.--The Mississippi State Port at Gulfport is starting to get used to firsts. Now this one: First port to ship Southern yellow pine to Cuba.
It's far from the first shipment to Cuba from Gulfport. Ships have left Gulfport since December 2001, when frozen chickens were sent to Havana.
The most recent shipment left Thursday, this time with lumber.
Lanahan Lumber Co. of Jacksonville, Fla., negotiated a deal to ship Southern yellow pine to Havana for the next six months on vessels operated by Crowley Liner Services of Jacksonville. It will use ports ...
