BUNIA, Congo _ The militia soldiers marched the five naked men and one woman, in the dark hours of the morning, towards a trench. Along the way, they saw gruesome hints of their future. Bodies were carelessly buried. The feet of four victims stuck up from shallow graves.
The soldiers of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) forced the men to lie down in the trench, a survivor recalls. "Don't take more than five minutes to finish your job," the commander ordered his soldiers. They nodded and raised their bayonets.
