MATALAN'S millionaire chairman last night denied speculation that the company could be snapped up by supermarket chain Asda.
A spokeswoman for John Hargreaves, whose family owns 52pc of Matalan's downtrodden shares, said the company had received no takeover approaches.
``Nothing is for sale and no-one has approached the company formally or informally,'' she said.
The bid rumours circling the Skelmersdale- based discount retailer sent shares in the group soaring by more than 12pc.
