The notion of an orchestra, a large ensemble of musicians directed to play together, is a Western notion, essentially unknown in China until the middle of the past century. Since then, the Chinese have taken to the concept, not only creating orchestras that employ Western instruments but also those of Chinese origin.

The latter is what interests Warren Chang, a native of Shanghai, who came to Seattle in the mid-1980s to give a concert and stayed to become a force in the promotion of Chinese culture in the United States.
