In a move that was expected, the Reds activated shortstop Barry Larkin from the 15-day disabled list Friday and inserted him in the starting lineup. In a move that was in no way expected, they made room for Larkin on the 25-man roster by placing right-hander John Riedling on the 15-day DL with elbow tendinitis.

Riedling, who in his past three starts has allowed 18 runs in a total of 10 2/3 innings, said the elbow has been bothering him for several weeks, going back to when he was still working out of the bullpen.
