BABIES born by caesarean section are twice as likely to develop food allergies as those delivered naturally, according to new research.

The study, presented in Paris last week, showed that babies delivered surgically are also nearly 50 per cent more likely to suffer diarrhoea and stomach and intestinal problems in the vital first few months.

The worrying findings come at a time when record numbers of babies in the UK are being delivered by caesarean.

Researchers believe a surgical delivery interferes with the normal development of protective bacteria in the baby's gut.
