MOST of us, I'm sure, have seen dragonflies - not to be confused with daddy long-legs or crane flies which they only vaguely resemble.

Dragonflies have a long body with two pairs of wings - daddy-long-legs have only one pair of wings. Very large eyes enable the dragonfly to spot its insect prey from quite a distance, scooping the prey up with its legs which are spiky to enable the dragonfly to hold the prey securely.

There are two distinctive groups - the Anisoptera or true dragonflies,and the Zygoptera or damselflies.
