WASHINGTON _ Some came with words of inspiration, others with expressions of congratulations, but all came to remember and celebrate a since-passed friend and civil-rights activist Medgar Evers.

The ceremony, at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, commemorated the 40th anniversary of Evers' death. The World War II veteran spent years building the civil-rights movement in Mississippi from the time he graduated from college in 1952 until his murder in 1963.

Evers' wife, Myrlie Evers-Williams, spoke to a crowd of about 150 friends, family, high school students and dignitaries including Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., ...
