ATHENS, Ohio -- City officials are taking extra steps this year to deal with the tons of trash 17,000 Ohio University students will leave behind as they move out for the summer now that classes are over.

The city is sending out additional crews for pickups and has contracted with a private hauler to remove piles. Residents or their landlords will be charged pickup and labor costs, which could top $600 for large piles, said Ray Hazlett, assistant service-safety director for the city.

"This year, we're not going to let anyone's trash sit out there for three or four days," he said.
