Summertime, and the living's supposed to be easy.
But it's part of the job of the media to terrify. Which is not as easy as it sounds because, over time, people seem to absorb fear.
Take deer ticks. A few years ago, we had a barrage of front-page stories about the tiny tick, which carries Lyme disease. Sensational headlines could have read:
Watch out for what you can't see!
The tick and the disease still thrive, but it feels like the terror is gone. Most people probably don't even wear proper protective clothing - long, light-colored pants, tucked into long white socks, and a long-sleeved shirt, ...
