While it seems natural now to put an infant down to sleep on her back, that wasn't always the practice.

Since 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended infants be placed on their backs for sleeping. As a result, the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has fallen 40 percent.

SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of infants, occurring most often between one month and six months of age. It's the leading cause of death of infants in that age group.

The change in sleep position was initiated after studies showed that the SIDS rate is lower in countries where babies are put to sleep on their backs.
