In the past, computers were solely tools of the quantitative realm--math, chemistry, physics, engineering, medicine, business, and other such disciplines. The qualitative realm, which deals with the expressive manipulation of visual qualities--the Arts--has traditionally been at the opposite pole. And, as long as the computer was primarily a tool of the quantitative realm, artists and designers disregarded it. Yet, if computers ever were anathema to the arts, they are no longer so. An exploration of visual literacy, the ability to understand and communicate through visual symbols, is a perfect demonstration of the possibilities computer assisted design can bring to the Arts.
