SAN FRANCISCO -- This beautiful city by the bay, where tourists famously leave their hearts, is also a vibrant if challenging retail market.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, San Francisco County is home to about 777,000 people, living in an area of just 47 square miles. Another 590,000 people commute into the city from elsewhere in the San Francisco Bay area, which encompasses nearly 7,000 square miles and has a population of about 6.8 million. And then there are the tourists.
