PAUL TRACY WENT THROUGH A transformation in 2002. Was it intended? Probably not. Tracy might even be unaware that it happened, but it most certainly did.
Before the 2002 Indianapolis 500, many CART followers considered Tracy to be a punk. He had his share of fans, but he had even more detractors--people who deplored his driving style. CART noticed, as well: Tracy had been on probation several times for rough driving and was suspended for the opening event of the 1999 season, in Miami.
But one race not only appears to have changed Tracy, but also has changed the way he is viewed. With the laps counting down, Tracy was CARTs only hope to steal the 2002 ...
