How JIT buying works when you're the supplier
Coating parts on a just-in-time basis, primarily for the automotive industry, puts two major responsibilites on Wayne E. Appleby, director of purchasing at Industrial Power Coatings, Norwalk, Ohio:
* He needs to be able to accurately anticipate the types of power coatings needed and have them on hand at the drop of a hat.
* He's in charge of the company's in-house fleet of tractors and trailers.
The two go together, notes Appleby, because JIT at IPC often means turnaround times of 48 hours, or even 24. Suppliers, parts coming in, and coated parts going out all have to fit into a finely tuned ...
