IN a superb day of racing for the North West Closed Circuit Championships in Birkenhead Park one of the biggest shocks was in the fourth category event which opened the programme.
The winner was Mark Bell of Port Sunlight Wheelers who sprinted home ahead of Andrew French,of Horwich CC,and his Sunlight club member Brian Ellis. Bell was the British professional road race champion back in 1986 and now rides for pleasure and general fitness.
The Elites title went to Gray Adamson of Maghull, riding for Ridley-FSA. He used his sprint to hold off Mark Baker and veteran Tony Parkinson.
