After my rototiller, my favorite garden tool is a modified hoe. I had several regular hoes, but no "finger hoe" for close weeding around row crops. Unwilling to pay what the local nursery and garden boutique was charging for a regulation finger hoe, I took a torch and grinder to my least used hoe, creating a spear-point shaped tool that would serve (see diagram).
The standard hoe was built stronger than the finger hoes available, so my creation is very stout for so small a blade. I use the fine point for close weeding, the broad edges for heavier weeding, and the two back points to hook big weeds. It has proven excellent for making small furrows during planting. ...
