When Bob Carpenter finally realized his dream the job's responsibilities had changed dramatically.

Carpenter saw himself as an athletic director while he was playing football, baseball and basketball at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park in the mid-1960s.

"I visualized in my mind that's what I wanted to do," Carpenter said. "At the time I didn't know it would take on the form it did back then."

Not that it was a problem for Carpenter when he took over as Barrington's athletic director in 1987. And it definitely wasn't one during a 16-year tenure in charge of one of the state's top sports programs.
