Jun. 20--Amid growing debate over the use of antibiotics in livestock, McDonald's Corp. has told its worldwide poultry suppliers to phase out some drugs that are often used to fatten chicken as well as treat sick people.

Overuse of antibiotics such as penicillin could be causing some drugs to lose their effectiveness, scientists say, by speeding up the rate at which bacteria become resistant.

McDonald's is the first major fast-food company to issue guidelines for its suppliers on the subject. It said Thursday it has given poultry suppliers until the end of 2004 to ...
