After being portrayed as rivals for state aid crumbs at the Capitol this year, the municipal officials at the League of Minnesota Cities' annual conference in St. Cloud this week might have been expected to shoot visual and verbal darts at each other.
Instead, mutual support was the mood of the meeting - of the sort that would be recognized by schoolkids who have all been unfairly punished by a harsh teacher. Barbara Nelson, city administrator of Spring Lake Park, said as much to state Finance Commissioner Dan McElroy. "We were treated as a naughty child who spent too much on things you told us we had to buy," Nelson complained.
