RUMFORD, R.I. - Considering the vast array of international talent the 42-year-old Northeast Amateur golf tournament annually attracts, it was fitting that New Bedford's Kevin Silva used the occasion to display his newly acquired southern accent.
The 19-year-old Silva just completed his freshman year at the University of North Carolina and the experience he gained while competing for the Tar Heels, who finished ninth in the NCAA Championship this spring, helped sharpen his game.
Yesterday at Wannamoisett Country Club in an 80-golfer field, Silva carded a 4-under-par 65 to share the first-round lead with Jason Hartwick of ...
