I felt as if I were riding a bucking bronco, bouncing out of my seat and clutching my metal handlebar for dear life. What I was really doing was whale-watching on a small inflatable boat between the islands of Faial and Pico in the Azores.
"The sea is so much calmer today than yesterday," a fellow passenger said cheerily to her friend. I did not find this reassuring.
