From earliest times, religious reformers who wished to change the Christian Church were blocked, frustrated, or crushed by church authorities. Yet these reformers rarely sought to break away from the church. The movement for change (the Reformation) that began with Martin Luther in 1517, however, shattered religious unity in Europe.
