1780-1790: Building a New Nation

After the American Revolution, our new government needed a home, not part of any one state. Southerners wanted the new national capital to be halfway between Maine and Georgia--on the Potomac River, near Georgetown, Maryland. Northerners didn't like that idea.

The new country grew weaker as the arguments went on. Then in 1787, the Constitutional Convention created the three strong branches of the federal government that we know today: executive (the president), legislative (two houses of Congress), and judicial (the Supreme Court).
