Lest you confuse Pearl Jam with any other mainstream rock band working today, consider this:
The band recently purchased and plans to conserve 5,700 tons of Madagascar rainforest carbon to offset the 5,700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions that will be generated by tour buses, jets and cars driven by fans during the current tour.
That'd be front page news coming from the Limp Bizkit or Eminem camp, but for Pearl Jam - together since 1991 - it's a tiny footnote in a long career of benevolent rocking that's included years of benefit shows, charity albums and general goodwill.
