Dassel, Minn. -- Until last fall, voters in this central Minnesota city had spurned repeated efforts to permit a liquor store. But in November they not only voted 346 to 263 in favor of alcohol sales but authorized the town to run its own store.
If that happens, Dassel could be the first Minnesota city in at least 10 years, and perhaps in nearly 30, to open a municipal liquor store - muni, for short. The number of city-owned stores statewide has declined in recent years.
On July 7, council members are expected to discuss a consultant's analysis of potential revenues, expenses and profits. If the numbers look ...
