Long ago - 50 years, 100 years, no one's sure how many - the hill began to slip.
Above the valley formed by the East Branch of Limestone Creek in the town of Cazenovia, not far from where Madison and Onondaga counties meet, the edge of a pasture fell away, slid downhill and pushed red earth and slick gray clay into the creek, clouding the water.
After a while the water - flowing clear and cold down from the highland bogs and marshes of the Tioughnioga Wildlife Management Area near Erieville - washed itself and its gravel bed clean.
After a while the mayfly, caddis fly and stonefly larvae came back ...
