IT IS WELL RECOGNIZED that driving after drinking is a major problem among American youth, and there is a considerable literature about the extent of driving after drinking and about the characteristics of youths who are most at risk for driving after drinking (Donovan, 1993; O'Malley and Johnston, 1999; Townsend et al., 1998). Much less is known about the extent to which young Americans drive after smoking marijuana or using other illicit drugs.
