Strawberry season has arrived.
The false season of photogenic but flavor-deprived California berries revs up around Valentine's Day, when restaurateurs and markets are eager to serve up the heart-shaped fruits. But now, at last, is the time for Washington's own berries, which are fragrant, sweet and red to the core. As a friend said the other night, "Once you taste a Skagit Valley berry, you feel guilty for eating any other kind of strawberry the rest of the year."
