Beta carotene supplementation might reduce the risk of age-related cataract in people who smoke, researchers from the United States say.
To examine the development of age-related cataract in a trial of beta carotene supplementation, the researchers randomised 22,071 male physicians to receive either beta carotene 50mg on alternate days or placebo for 12 years. The main outcome measures were age-related cataract and extraction of age-related cataract, based on self-report that was confirmed by medical record review.
