I just finished reading Karl Zinsmeister's "Dust and Stars" (June). Rarely have I read anything as compelling and uplifting. Zinsmeister's description of our men in battle filled me with pride and gratitude. How I envy today's fighting men and women, who have an immense sense of purpose and mission. Their current political leaders, likewise, have deep integrity as well as an appreciation of the dangers of battle. Nonetheless, these leaders understand that, at times, battles are unavoidable.
I once asked myself the question, "Where do we get the men who will scale the cliffs of the Pointe-du-Hoc, storm the beaches of Iwo Jima, or climb the stairs of a burning ...
