For Hispaniola the coffee outlook is bleak
Drought and lower prices caused by the breakdown of the International Coffee Organization's quota system a year ago July have devastated the coffee crop in both nations occupying the island of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean.
The Dominican Republic, occupying the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola, and Haiti, occupying the western third of the island, both produce highly prized Arabica coffee. In the Dominican Republic, coffee is the second largest agricultural export, second only to sugar; in Haiti, coffee is the largest agricultural export, representing almost a sixth of export earnings.
