PURCHASING's Leadtime Index (1992=100) has fallen dramatically over the past two months. From an eight-year high of 131.7 in March, the index, which tracks national average delivery speeds for more than 160 commonly used industrial products, slid to just 97.4 in May. What's more, the decline went across the board, showing up in every major commodity category tracked. Biggest declines came in metals. For example, a substantial loosening of sheet steel supplies dragged PURCHASING'S steel leadtime composite index (unweighted) down 40% between March and May.
