Over the last decades the acquisition policies of the African Department of this museum concentrated mainly on traditional African art. In the planned renovation of the permanent exhibition, which should be finished in five years, the focus will shift to contemporary works that reflect the present-day cultural situation in some African societies. Besides objects showing the consequences of globalization in everyday life, and the change in traditional handicrafts, a major theme of the new permanent exhibition will be contemporary art.
