Overhead power and communications cable are at risk of being damaged by the forces of nature--powerful straight winds, tornados and ice storms can bring down aerial lines, interrupting services, posing threats to safety and requiring costly repairs.
For decades, utility providers have eliminated this risk by installing much of their new distribution lines underground. However, a lot of old aerial cable remains in service, and both its age and susceptibility to storm damage create continuing problems.
