Welcome to a special edition of Youth Studies Australia focusing on the popular music activities of youth. This issue provides a snapshot of contemporary popular music studies within particular Australian contexts. Popular music remains a crucial cultural form for young people, and, as Simon Frith (2001) has identified, popular music can transcend the everyday material world, taking "us out of ourselves". Music can reinforce collective identities or be used to mark out individual differences and values; "musical tastes matter so much to people because, however vainly, they take them to be a statement of what sort of people they are" (Frith 2001, p.39).
