My neighbours here in London, Ont. have an interesting history. In 1996, four siblings ages eight to 16 escaped from Kabul, Afghanistan after their home was bombed. Their eldest sister was killed. Separated from their parents who they feared had perished, they fled their home following the Afghan-Russian War and before the takeover of the Taliban. On arrival in Moscow, the eldest assumed responsibility for her family in a refugee hostel in Moscow, teaching in a school for other refugees.
