Article: Gas Tax Increase Falls Short of Seattle Area's Transportation Needs.

Jun. 30--The state gas tax is going up by a nickel a gallon Tuesday, and it probably won't be the last time Puget Sound motorists will have to pay more to fill 'er up.

The 5-cent increase, which raises the state gas tax to 28 cents a gallon, is the main source of money for $4.2 billion in transportation projects that will be built across the state over the next decade.

But motorists in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties might be asked to approve an additional 2.8 cents a gallon in an election tentatively set for fall 2004.
