At Minnesota Lynx basketball games, kids are awed by the athletic grace of players such as Katie Smith, Sheri Sam and Tamika Williams.
But up in the stands is an equally inspirational member of the team, another athletic pioneer. Wearing wire-rim glasses and a suit, he closely watches the players for limps and other signs of injury.
He's Dr. Joel Boyd, a Twin Cities orthopedic surgeon who is one of the Lynx's head team physicians. Professional teams usually have an orthopedic surgeon and a general practitioner who share head doctor duties.
