TELEVISED COVERAGE of the Gulf War daily reminds us that burning oil can make a bully smokescreen. But it's not the first time. Remember the satellite images of the fiery battle of the Fao Peninsula during the Iran-Iraq war? There were sooty plumes aplenty back then, but only now do we hear the claim that such fires could plunge a large portion of the Northern Hemisphere into chilling darkness "for months or years."
