Asked to name an oceanographer of international stature, many of us might name Jacques Cousteau, Robert Ballard, or Sylvia A. Earle. Since the death of Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1997 and the 1998 International Year of the Ocean [http://ioc.unesco.org/iyo], many novel and stunning advances in our knowledge about the seas have occurred.
