I HESITATE to intrude into the acrimonious spat between the Government and the BBC over events leading to war with Iraq, especially since both sides have declared a truce. But the truce will be short-lived and it will soon be gloves off again in what is already a remarkable media row.

It is the most savage onslaught in living memory by government on the BBC, far worse even than Tory attempts to bring the Beeb to heel in the aftermath of the US raid on Libya in 1986, when Norman Tebbit played the role Alastair Campbell is playing now as BBC-baiter.

In the heat of battle, both sides have lashed out in the wrong direction.
