CONSUMERS CONTINUE their love affair with area rugs--more than 6% of U.S. households have them on their shopping lists this year. Younger households, especially Gen X and Gen Y, are prime shoppers. The two groups account for 28% of 2003 area rug shoppers. Their budgets are modest--a median of $80 for Gen Y and $100 for Gen X, compared with the national median of $150.
Other hot prospects can be found among African-American households. If they buy according to their plans, they will account for 10% of this year's area rug buyers. Their median budget is $100.
