Chicago would prefer to see some stretch limos shrunk down to size.
The Department of Consumer Services is reviewing limousines licensed in the city after some complaints that supersized limos pose a safety risk to passengers. Many popular stretch limos are more than five feet longer than standards suggested by automakers.
New guidelines stop short of banning extra-long limos but require owners in the city to present records on repairs and size modifications so safety can be determined on a limo-by-limo basis. There are 1,200 limousines licensed by the city.
